I remember the era when I first began to get into underground Hip Hop, I was late to the party so to speak. In my immediate circle the sounds of the time were D Block, Fabolous, Jeezy etc. it was during this time when I discovered what they call "the underground". At the time I was working in downtown Manhattan in Soho at the Adidas store. This time period unfolded a whole new ecosystem of music, art, fashion and thought for me. A world within the world of NY. I remember my brain being set ablaze by the ride on the F train, the smell of Alphabet City, DQM, Sugar Headquarters, the graffiti and the grungey simplicity of downtown. I could feel the tingles in my brain, the feeling of new ground spreading beneath my feet... i would often think "I wonder if Basquiat walked down this block?" I have a love for classic buildings, I remember the small elements of the prior eras that remained, like the old CBGB's on Bowery spots like Burkina and Bowery Poets Cafe. First hearing of MF Doom ,Sean Price, Saigon... it was mystifying for me. The sounds, the references, the life perspective, nothing before had ever spoke to me in such a unique way.
